Leipzig’s most popular postcard motif

The Saxon metropolis of Leipzig has some beautiful buildings. One of them, which is also one of the city’s most popular postcard motifs, is the New Town Hall. It was built between 1899 and 1905 on the medieval, dilapidated ruins of the Pleißenburg castle according to the plans of architect Hugo Licht in the historicist style. Licht was the winner of an architectural competition. On October 7, 1905, one of the most important city halls of the turn of the century was ceremoniously inaugurated in the presence of the Saxon King Friedrich August III. I am always fascinated by the architectural beauty of this building. Its richly decorated façade of light gray Main-Franconian shell limestone is particularly remarkable. In addition to the lion as the heraldic animal, the city goddess Lipsia and other allegorical figures representing the arts of printing, justice, science, and craftsmanship, as well as numerous animals and mythical creatures, are also represented here. Renowned artists such as Fritz Schumacher, Georg Wrba, and Carl Seffner were involved in the monumental construction, which was built under the motto “Arx nova surrexit” (a new castle arises), an inscription above the main entrance. The New Town Hall is not only an absolute eye-catcher from the outside, but also impresses on the inside with its lavishly decorated main staircase, its historic council chamber, and the upper and lower lobby, where cultural events are regularly held. The New Town Hall has also become one of Leipzig’s landmarks thanks to its imposing town hall tower, which stands 114.7 meters high on the foundations of the old Pleißenburg tower. It houses a magnificent viewing balcony that offers a fantastic view over the city. This can be visited as part of a guided tour. In addition, the Ratskeller restaurant, one of the most traditional restaurants in the trade fair city, is located in the vaulted cellar of the New Town Hall. The New Town Hall, which has been the seat of the city administration since 1905, is one of the largest town hall buildings in Germany. It is a magnificent testimony to Leipzig’s urban development, wonderfully representing the economic and cultural strength of this trading city.
