At the tip of the Lavedo peninsula, on the picturesque shores of Lake Como, lies the enchanting Villa del Balbianello. This historic estate, dating back to 1787, is steeped in history and romance, providing a fascinating backdrop for weddings and serving as a filming location for famous films, including James Bond’s ‘Casino Royale’.
The history of Villa del Balbianello begins with its original purpose as a small Franciscan monastery. The two bell towers, remnants of this early structure, are silent witnesses to the villa’s development. In 1787, Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini acquired the property and commissioned the construction of the villa, transforming the site into an elegant residence. The architectural design of the villa is characterised by two overlapping squares connected by an exquisite loggia that offers breathtaking views of the Baia di Venere and the Baia di Diana.
The gardens of Villa del Balbianello are a masterpiece in themselves, carefully designed to blend harmoniously with the natural topography. Terraces and balustrades cascade down from the villa, enclosing the steep rock formations and creating different levels adorned with manicured lawns, hedges, cypresses and oaks. Strategically placed benches allow visitors to sit down and admire the tranquil beauty of Lake Como or marvel at the villa itself.
After Cardinal Durini’s death, the villa passed into the possession of his nephew, but was eventually sold to Giuseppe Arconati Visconti, who made further improvements to the garden and loggia. The property fell into disrepair for a time until it was purchased by American General Butler Ames after the First World War. Ames carried out extensive renovations and restored the villa to its former glory.
In 1974, the villa found a new owner in Count Guido Monzino, an adventurous explorer known for his polar expeditions. Monzino filled the villa with artefacts from his travels, creating a unique museum-like atmosphere that can still be admired today. His deep attachment to the villa led him to request that his ashes be buried in a small pavilion under the loggia after his death in 1988.
Monzino generously bequeathed Villa del Balbianello to the Italian environmental foundation FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano). Since then, the organisation has maintained the villa and ensured its preservation through public donations. Today, the gardens are open to visitors from 15 March to 31 October, with admission fees contributing to the FAI’s ongoing conservation efforts.
What sets Villa del Balbianello apart is not only its historical significance and aesthetic appeal, but also its fascination as a film location. The villa gained widespread fame through its use in several high-profile films. In ‘A Month by the Lake’ (1995), starring Vanessa Redgrave and Edward Fox, the villa was used extensively to capture its romantic atmosphere. Even more remarkably, the villa served as an important filming location in ‘Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones’ and the James Bond film ‘Casino Royale’. These films showcased the villa’s timeless elegance and helped cement its status as a symbol of cinematic romance.
One of the most attractive aspects of Villa del Balbianello is its suitability as a wedding venue. The combination of breathtaking lake views, lush gardens and historic charm makes it an ideal location for couples seeking a fairytale setting for their special day. The villa’s loggia, with its panoramic views, provides the perfect backdrop for wedding ceremonies, while the terraced gardens offer numerous locations for intimate photo shoots and celebrations. Many couples have exchanged vows here, surrounded by the magical aura of the villa and the surrounding landscape.
The villa’s connection to romance goes beyond weddings. Visitors are often enchanted by the peaceful and poetic surroundings. A stroll through the carefully tended gardens, with the gentle breeze from the lake and the scent of blooming flowers, evokes a feeling of timeless romance.
Couples walking hand in hand and enjoying the same view that has inspired filmmakers and explorers alike experience a shared moment of tranquillity and beauty. In summary, Villa del Balbianello embodies the essence of romance, history and natural beauty. Whether as a luxurious wedding venue, a fascinating historical site or a breathtaking film location, it captures the hearts of all who visit. The FAI’s commitment ensures that this treasure will continue to enchant future generations, allowing them to enjoy the splendour and romantic charm of the most famous villa on Lake Como.
