The world’s only reconstructed Roman villa complex

The picturesque Moselle community of Perl is home to a unique attraction: a completely reconstructed ancient villa complex. Villa Borg is located not far from the old Roman road that stretches from Metz to Trier on a 7.5-hectare site that was excavated in 1986 by the Merzig-Wadern Cultural Foundation. Today, this ancient estate is embedded in an archaeological park. The entrance leads through a gate that opens onto an inner courtyard with craftsmen’s huts. After crossing a bridge with a moat, you reach the inner courtyard garden with the imposing manor house, which has a magnificent entrance hall. This manor house is home to an archaeological museum with original finds. To the right of the entrance hall is the villa’s bath, adjoined by a tavern offering regional and Roman dishes. To the left are the residential and service wings, which can be used as day rooms and event spaces. The fully functional kitchen completes the domain of the villa rustica. The wings of the building are connected by surrounding corridors. Particularly impressive are the six Roman gardens, which were created as herb, fruit, vegetable, rose, and flower gardens as part of the EU project “Gardens Without Borders.” Excavations are still taking place on the site today, and there are also numerous events.
