The windmill in the picturesque coastal town of Domburg

One of the oldest and most popular seaside resorts in the Netherlands is Domburg, also known as the Saint Tropez or Sylt of the Netherlands. This picturesque seaside resort on the North Sea coast on the Walcheren peninsula belongs to the province of Zeeland, which has the most hours of sunshine in the whole of the Netherlands during the summer months. Domburg is known for its wide beach with beautiful sand dunes, its historic old town, and the small forest area “De Manteling.” At the entrance to this coastal town, on a small hill on Roosjesweg, stands the Weltevreden windmill, World Peace, the secret star of this popular town. This mill, which served as a model for the world-famous painters Piet Mondriaan and Jan Toorop, dates back to 1817 and was still in operation until 1967. After that, this national symbol of the Netherlands fell into disrepair until 1970, when the municipality of Veere acquired the 22-meter-high mill, whose sails have a diameter of 22.2 meters. The mill was restored between 2003 and 2006 and is still used occasionally to grind grain.
